Bat For Lashes - "Laura" video: "You're the glitter in the dark"

I may be biased, but I like Bat For Lashes' new song, "Laura." It's more stripped-down than other hits like "Daniel" and "What's a Girl to Do?" but it fits Natasha Khan's style of poetic lyrics and meaningful instrumentation.

Her new album The Haunted Man comes out October 15th, and she is currently on tour in the UK.

Laura Veirs - "July Flame" video

Summer will be upon us in another month, so I thought I'd share this lovely song by Laura Veirs. "July Flame" comes off her 2010 album of the same name; it started as a competition between Veirs and a friend when they were intrigued by "July flame" peaches at a farmer's market. And the video features fireworks in the shape of peaches! But the name takes on a second meaning, for a secret summer love:

July flame, ashes of a secret heart
Falling in my lemonade
Unslakable thirsting in the backyard

Laura Veirs resides in Portland, Oregon, where she crafts folksy indie pop, and she is playing shows this week in Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon.

Jukebox the Ghost - "Somebody," "Oh Emily" [free MP3]

Jukebox the Ghost just released "Somebody" and "Oh Emily," the first two songs in Safe Travels, their album coming out in June.

They've crafted great songs like "Good Day" and "Schizophrenia," and if these tracks are any indication, their third album won't disappoint.

"Somebody" is a polished, fun indie-pop song with a great beat and instrumentation. Just listen to that piano, or the vocals on the chorus...

"Oh Emily" is an unusually bright take on a relationship's end, with a catchy chorus; the percussion and layering is great.

You can stream both songs off their website: http://jukeboxtheghost.com, which includes their tour dates, or buy "Somebody" from iTunes. "Oh Emily" is a free download if you enter your e-mail on the site.

Candidate - "April Again" [free MP3]

Last year I spotlighted Candidate's track "I'd Come Running". They're back with a slightly different sound in the lush "April Again," a tale of unrequited love. It's a free download on Bandcamp, so check it out:

Kimbra - "Plain Gold Ring"

I'll admit, I only got into Kimbra recently, through her vocals on Gotye's single "Somebody That I Used to Know."

Some of her other popular songs, like "Good Intent," "Cameo Lover," and "Settle Down" are good from a musical perspective, but I just couldn't get into them. They're bright pop songs, and I need something deep and resonant.

However, I love "Plain Gold Ring." Watch the live performance and you'll see why--Kimbra moves and breathes the music. It's an inspiring performance, and makes the song, from her album Vows, a total earworm.

The Temper Trap - "Rabbit Hole" video

I've been listening to a lot of music lately and the first song to really blow me away is The Temper Trap's "Rabbit Hole." It's off their new album coming out late this spring.

"Rabbit Hole" starts with a calm but sinister opening, and the wait for the build-up pays off. Definitely one of my favorite songs in recent years.
